Assalamualaikum and a very best wish to all students for the new semester that has just begun. It’s the Jan-May 2012 semester everybody! Some of us are just coming back from their long 4 months holidays, some have just started it. The more important matter we got now is, we are already been into February of 2012. It's good to ask how things go on now since the last time we make new promises for ourselves to keep the new resolution alive. Let’s revise the most fundamental guideline to start off this new semester as strongly as possible.
1. Get a time management system. Managing your time just may be your biggest challenge while in college. Find the time management system that works for you and make sure you give a high commitment to follow it. You may learn the way for managing your time from About.com.
2. Take a reasonable course load & credit hours. Make sure you have decided a suitable number of credit hour you’re going to carry depending on your co-curriculum activities, academic structure, health or previous result condition. This semester may sound great in theory, but it most likely will come back to haunt you in the long run. Sure, it may seem like a good way to improve your transcript, but the lower grades you might get because your course load is too heavy is a sure way to bring your transcript down, not up. So don't put too many unreasonable expectations on yourself.
3. Have your books purchased. It a big advantage for us to get book voucher worth RM200 from the 1Malaysia project run by our dearest Prime Minister. Remember to use that voucher for a good purpose like buying textbooks. That RM200 source from your parents’ hard work for you to smartly use it. Not having your books the first week of class can put you behind everyone else before you even had the chance to start. So put this point as the top priority.
4. Have some co-curricular involvement. You most likely do need to be involved in something other than your classes all day long to enjoy life campus. Join a club, get an on-campus job, volunteer somewhere, or just do something to keep your brain and life balanced. There are a lot of student bodies and club that can facilitate you with beneficial activities.
5. Get your finances in order. Make sure your finances are in order when you start a new semester and that they'll still be that way as you head toward finals week. For non-Petronas scholar, make sure that you remind yourself when you are supposed to settle with UTP Finance Dept before you’re being block from taking exam slip and exam itself.
6. Set up healthy outlets for fun and to relieve stress. You must already know that there will arrive a stressful time. Have things already in place -- like good groups of friends, exercise plans, hobbies, and smart ways to avoid pitfalls (like knowing how to avoid test anxiety) -- that will allow you to mentally check out and relax when things get intense.
7. Get information on where to go for help -- you know, just in case. When, and if, you find yourself juggling more than you can handle, trying to find help while under that kind of stress is nearly impossible. Learn where to go for help before your semester begins so that, just in case things get a little rough, your small speed bump doesn't turn into a major disaster zone. For foundation students, you are all given a small group that you can rely on which we call it Smart Group for Muslim students and Peer Circle for non-Muslim students. Use that advantage to explore this new UTP land. All the very best in your new semester!
